Going To A Theme Park Soon? These Amusement Park Hairstyles Are So Cute

I need to confess something: I thought I was prepared for our first family trip to Disneyland last month, but I completely underestimated the hair situation.

Jake spent the entire Pirates of the Caribbean ride trying to get his hair out of his eyes, and Maya’s carefully styled curls turned into a frizzy mess after exactly one ride on Splash Mountain.

Meanwhile, I was trying to take cute photos while constantly tucking flyaways behind my ears and pretending the wind from Space Mountain hadn’t completely destroyed whatever I’d attempted that morning.

So I did what any reasonable person does after a day of hair disasters — I spent way too much time researching theme park hairstyles that actually work, and honestly, I wish I’d found these ideas before our trip.

Amusement Park Hairstyles Ideas

Braided Crown

@lucja.bridalstylist

This is the kind of hairstyle that looks fancy but actually makes sense for a day when you’re going to be upside down repeatedly.

The braid wraps around like a crown and gets coiled into a low bun, which means everything stays exactly where you put it. I love how those soft pieces at the front keep it from looking too severe — it’s the perfect balance between practical and pretty.

The best part is that even if a few pieces work loose during the day, it still looks intentional.

Headband Top Bun

@crystalroseyall

Sometimes the simplest solutions are the best ones. A high bun keeps everything off your neck (crucial when it’s 85 degrees and you’re standing in line for an hour), and the headband catches any pieces that try to escape.

I’d probably skip the floral headband personally — I’m more of a plain black elastic headband person — but the concept is solid. Use a little hair gel on the sides if you want it to look polished all day.

Side Braid Ponytail

@lena_truelove

This is what happens when you want your ponytail to have a little more personality than usual. The side braid adds interest without being complicated, and everything flows together nicely.

I’d definitely use a volumizing mousse before starting — not because this style needs extra volume, but because mousse gives you that grippy texture that makes braiding easier and keeps everything from sliding around later.

Bow Low Bun

@littleknotco

The bow scrunchie automatically makes this more fun than a regular low bun, and low buns are already pretty much perfect for theme parks.

Keep your hair off your neck, stays secure, looks put-together in photos. The smoothing serum is a good call here — low buns can look sloppy if you don’t smooth everything down first, and the serum will help it stay that way even when you’re sweating.

Fishtail Ponytail

@todyeforofficial

I love how relaxed this looks while still being totally secure. The fishtail braid gives you that effortless texture that everyone wants but never knows how to achieve…

The face-framing pieces are key here — they soften the whole look and give you something to work with if the braid gets a little messy throughout the day (which it will, and that’s fine).

Braided Bubble Braid

@thegoodhairday

This is definitely a more involved style, but if you’re going somewhere special (like, say, your kid’s birthday trip to Universal), it might be worth the extra effort.

The Dutch braids at the top keep everything secure at the scalp level, and then the bubble effect adds all that visual interest. You’ll need multiple elastic bands, but it’s going to stay exactly where you put it.

Gently pull each bubble section to make them fuller — this is one of those styles that looks better a little imperfect.

Twisted Space Buns

@organicallyanna

Maya would absolutely lose her mind over this hairstyle, and honestly, it’s genius for theme parks.

Everything is twisted up and pinned tight, so nothing is going anywhere no matter what ride you get on. The key is making those twists really tight before you pin them — loose twists will start to unravel after a few hours of activity.

Half-Up Bow

@celebluxary

Half-up styles are perfect when you want your hair down but need it out of your face. The bow makes it special occasion-appropriate, which is nice when you’re spending $150 just to get into the park.

A light hairspray is definitely necessary here — half-up styles have a tendency to start sliding down throughout the day, especially if you’re on rides that flip you around.

Braided High Pony

@lilithmoonlife

High ponytails are the workhorses of theme park hair. Add a braid for extra security and visual interest, and you’ve got something that’s both practical and polished.

The braid at the base means even if your ponytail holder starts to slip (which happens when you’re sweating), everything stays contained. Those loose waves at the end keep it from looking too severe.

Floral Scrunchie

@xxl.scrunchie

Sometimes you just need a ponytail, and that’s completely fine. The floral scrunchie makes it feel more intentional than throwing your hair up with whatever elastic you found in the bottom of your purse (been there).

This is also great for people who want to wear hats — low ponytails work perfectly with baseball caps or visors.

Romantic Side Bow

The side placement keeps this from looking too young, and those vintage-style curls are surprisingly photogenic. I’d probably do this for a date night at the theme park rather than a family day — it’s a little more delicate than some of the other options.

The sheer bow is a nice touch. Less juvenile than a regular ribbon bow, more special than a plain elastic.

Clean Top Knot

@hairbylaurenknowlesx

This is my actual go-to for any day when I know I’m going to be active and don’t want to think about my hair.

Top knots stay put better than any other updo I’ve tried, and they work with everything — hats, sunglasses, earrings, whatever. Pull out a few face-framing pieces if you want it softer, or leave it sleek if you prefer the polished look.

Messy Half Bun

@belinda_lee_mills

The intentionally messy texture means you don’t have to worry about it looking perfect all day. In fact, the more disheveled it gets, the better it probably looks.

This style works especially well if you have bright colors or highlights — the loose, textured style shows them off nicely. Just twist the top section, pin it loosely, and let the rest flow.

Double Fishtail Braid

@dosanddyebyjulie

Double braids are definitely having a moment, and I can see why — they’re incredibly secure and look more complex than they actually are.

Fishtail braids have this nice loose texture that looks good even when they start to fray a little, which is inevitable after a full day of activities.

Braided Top Knot

@kateydenno

This is basically a regular top knot with extra insurance. The braid gives you more grip and texture to work with, so the final knot is more secure.

Plus it keeps you cool — having all that hair off your neck makes a real difference when you’re spending the day outside.

Bubble Side Braid

@thebridalcollective__

Bubble braids are definitely Instagram-worthy, and the side placement makes this feel more grown-up than center-parted versions.

You’ll need a bunch of small elastics for this one, but the payoff is worth it — each bubble section is secured separately, so even if one comes loose, the rest stays intact.

Cap Ponytail

@hairhush

This is basically the uniform for anyone who spends serious time outdoors, and for good reason. Sun protection for your face, hair contained but still flowing — it just works.

Make sure your ponytail holder is really secure since it’s doing all the work here. I’d probably use two elastics just to be safe, especially if you have thick hair.

Sleek Braided Bun

@jacobmullerhair

When you want to look polished but also need everything completely contained, this is your answer.

The braid gives you extra texture to work with when you’re forming the bun, so it holds better than a regular twisted bun would. And the low placement is comfortable even if you’re wearing headbands or hats.

Voluminous Updo

@denisedoesbridal

This looks like something you’d see at a wedding, but honestly, it’s more practical than you’d think for theme parks.

All that loose curly texture actually camouflages any messiness that develops throughout the day, and everything is pinned up and off your neck. Sometimes the fanciest-looking option is actually the most functional.

Wrapped Half-Up

@sarahwhair

Perfect middle ground between having your hair up and having it down. The wrapped section gives you that put-together look, but you still get to show off length and curls.

This is definitely more photo-ready than purely functional, so it’s good for special occasions when you want to look nice but still need some practicality.

Scarf Ponytail

@cherie.ellehk

I love how effortless this looks. Sometimes the best accessory is just a pretty scarf tied around a basic ponytail — it adds color and interest without any complicated styling.

The low placement is comfortable for long days, and if the scarf starts to slip, you can just retie it. Much more forgiving than styles that depend on perfect placement.

Boxer Braids

@elyssabraids

These are absolutely bulletproof. Once you’ve got boxer braids in, you’re not thinking about your hair again until you take them out.

They do take some time to put in properly, so this isn’t a quick morning-of-the-trip option. But if you’re planning ahead or have someone who can braid for you, they’re worth it for the complete peace of mind.
